FOX 25 in Boston interviewed Win Apel about his 50th state finish at Boston on 4/20/09.  (video)

WCSH covered the story of Mike Brooks running his ten day 500 mile race for Camp Sunshine.  (video)

Note from Tom Adair - Norm Frank has improved considerably says Mark Frank ---his son.   He has been moved to rehab center in Rochester, NY for 30 days to help him with walking and speech. Mark said it was okay for Norm friends to call him on his direct line in his room at the Jewish Home of Rochester (rehab center) at 585-427-9992 between 8:00am to 8:00pm. Friends can mail Norm letters or cards to Mark’s home at:  322 Valiant Drive, Rochester, NY  14623.   Any treats (cookies or candy) shipped to Norm must be sugar free. I spoke to Norm Saturday night after the Bear Chase marathon.   His speech and hearing still need help.    He’s improved modestly since the last time I talked with him. We chatted but it was limited because he could not understand everything I was saying (maybe he doesn’t understand Southern-talk.)

Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom Detore and his family.  His wife, Donna, passed away 4/2/09. http://www.amosfamily.com/2009/04/donna-lee-weinberg-detore/

On April 22nd I will start a ten day race to raise money for Camp Sunshine. My goal is to run/walk 500 miles and raise $10,000 so that very sick children and children with life threatening illnesses and their families can go to Camp Sunshine.
I am a 63 year old retired Auburn firefighter who has raised money in the past for C.S. by running a 135 mile race across Death Valley in July and doing a 6 day race completing 320 miles. I have also done several shorter races for Camp Sunshine. There is no way I could come close to accomplishing my goals if I was not helping seriously ill children attend Camp Sunshine.
Your donations will not only help these children and their families but will also motivate me towards my 500 mile goal.  Please donate by visiting  www.tendaysforsunshine.org or mailing a donation to Camp Sunshine 35 Acadia Road Casco, ME 04015. You can also learn more about Camp Sunshine at www.campsunshine.org . Check out the donation website for more information about the race and how to follow my progress toward my goal.
I know these are tough economic times so please be assured that any amount of your donation will be greatly appreciated and will be very motivating to me.      -Thank You, Mike Brooks

Email from John Bozung:  This is an invite to join us on an incredible run in the Andes of Peru-The Inca Trail Marathon to Machu Picchu - the lost city of the Incas.   We would love for any of you to be able to join us in August 2009.  We have a group already going from the Salt Lake City area (17 of us).  I can send you a copy of the itinerary and details about different options.  There is still time, but don't wait too long as the permits for the Inca Trail are now on sale as of Jan. 5th.  Last year they sold out 150 days ahead.  Passports are needed and air fares are the lowest that they've been in months.  Please call with any questions at 801-808-4222.   John Bozung jbozung@aol.com

Attention
- If you've sent an e-mail to Susan requesting your finisher's certificate, and have not yet received it - would you please re-send your request to sksinclair@yahoo.com.   She has managed to lock herself out of her msn account, and is unable to retrieve those requests.  Or, you can always send it the old-fashioned way - via "snail mail".  Thanks a bunch.

Members,
Want to know where you're ranked by marathon count, who's birthdays are coming up, ages our members finished the states, and all kinds of demographics? We have a feature to the club web site called Demographics. Click on Membership on the drop down menu. This is an ongoing project and we add functions to it occasionally. Play with it at your leisure.  Send us updates to your marathon count, states completed, location where you completed the states, etc. Updates to our database are done nearly daily. If you haven't done so, please send us a digital photo to add to the membership list.  It helps members recognize each other at the races.   .jpg works best.  http://www.50statesmarathonclub.com/50dc/demographics.html

Members!! The club has secured an arrangement with Hometown Threads to offer discounted embroidered merchandise to our members. You can choose from apparel, jackets, bags, totes, etc. with our 50 States Marathon Club logos.   You can also have your name embroidered on the apparel for a small additional fee. You can order directly from the web site.  If you prefer to add additional text or FINISHER, please specify in the "Additional Instructions" field in the order form online. Hometown Threads will contact you directly about any questions you have concerning your order.   They also have a large logo available for the back of jackets and heavier items.

*New function on our web site*
We have added a section to the web site called "Race Results" under the "Information" heading at the top of this web page.  This resource will help our members who are looking for results from races for their certification. If you have old results or are looking for old results, please check out this new function.

Greg Taylor let us know about a great free website that allows you to create a map with the states you select shaded. You can select up to 6 different criteria (six colors). Pretty nice for creating nifty looking maps that show which states one has completed.
http://monarch.tamu.edu/~maps2/us.htm

Jay has listed schedules which will allow you to do marathons in every state and DC without having to do two marathons on any weekend.  "This began as an exercise to satisfy my own curiosity.  It was so much work that I have decided to publish it.  I have no plans to attempt this but hopefully it will help someone who might actually be able to do this."

I’d like your help in promoting my autobiography, Running through My Mind: Confessions of an Every Day Runner.   After 105,000+ miles and (literally) running every day for over 28 years, I think I’ve managed to compile the complete book of running.  From Peachtree to Boston to a ‘run across Georgia’ to 24-hour endurance runs to Badwater to Western States—I’ve managed to taste a little bit of everything running has to offer in my quest to cover the spectrum in my running career (which is still going strong, by the way).  I would appreciate it if you would forward this to the members of your running club as well as anyone else you believe might be interested or in need of a little motivation, a little inspiration, and a whole lot of entertainment.  Thanks in advance for your support.  -Scott Ludwig  Available now on www.amazon.com  100% of author royalties will be donated to the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association in memory of the author's parents.
